ULTIMATE SURVIVAL TEQs & LES STROUD vs BEAR GRILLS!

Hi All,

So here is another place to discuss survival. However this is when you are STUCK OUT THERE. If it ever happens to you, campers, BOATERS (we have a lot of them!) Hitch-hikers, ANY BAD situation... Always good to know tricks.

Now the POLL - WHO will REALLY survive- LES or BEAR?

I think Les would survive longer even though I enjoy Bear's show more.

bear grylls is a hollywood pretender
he can take his " risks " because he knows he has help 15 ft away ( cameraman )

bear grylls is an outdoor Billy Mays :thumpdown

when Les goes out on a 7 day shoot, he is alone and does all his filming himself

most people don't realize the extra walking he does to get some of the shots we see

Bear Grylls has always come across to me as more of a stunt man than anything else. Some of the shit he jumps off of or into would be just plain stupid in a real survival situation.

Bear Grillys is a hell of an athlete and adrenaline junky.

he was 19 or 20 when he climbed everest. that is a pretty big deal.

but that is all he is.

stroud has been a hardcore survivalist and bush explorer for many years before he had his own show.

Bear could kill Stroud in less than 20 seconds with his bare hands. The people who like Survivorman are the ones that can identify with Stroud: nerdy, annoying, boring, and couldn't get laid in high school.<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"><meta name="ProgId" content="Word.Document"><meta name="Generator" content="Microsoft Word 11"><meta name="Originator" content="Microsoft Word 11"><link rel="File-List" href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CAdmin%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsoh tml1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml"><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:PunctuationKerning/> <w:ValidateAgainstSchemas/> <w:SaveIfXMLInvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:IgnoreMixedContent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables/> <w:SnapToGridInCell/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules/> <w:DontGrowAutofit/> </w:Compatibility> <w:BrowserLevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" LatentStyleCount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><style> <!-- /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> </style><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]-->

Bear holds the record as the youngest surviving person to have climbed everest.

there was one other person who climbed everest at the same age, but died later in a climbing accident.

Now ask yourself... who could i stand for weeks on end?

play that harmonica less.....

Re: ULTIMATE SURVIVAL TEQs & LES STROUD vs BEAR GRILLS!

I'm going with Bear on this one. I think I have learned more useful stuff from his show then from SurvivorMan. Sure some of the stuff he does is dumb and too risky but that is what makes his show exciting to watch. He might have a crew there for safety but some of the stuff, like the free climbing or going down white water, in a hand built raft, could still get him killed. Pretty bad ass if you ask me.

Usually Les just sits around for 5 days. He tries all these techniques and they rarely work. I would like to see them work so I know they are actually worth using. It seems in many cases that he hasn't had much practice at the stuff he is doing. You have to give him props for doing it alone though.

I'll watch either show if they are on and I have time.

Like I said before, Bear is more entertaining and fun to watch but at least Les is real.

I can't believe no one has brought this up yet:

GRYLLS' THRILLS BOGUS: EXPERT
SURVIVALIST CHARGED WITH CUSHY SHORTCUTS
By DON KAPLAN

IN THE MUCK: Bear Grylls shows off his survival skill on "Man vs. Wild," but an expert who says he worked on the show claims some stunts are faked.

July 24, 2007

Discovery Channel he-man Bear Grylls, the host of the survival-skills show "Man vs. Wild," is barely the man he seems to be on TV.

On the program, Grylls appears to camp out in quickly-built shelters deep in the wilderness while battling hypothermia and dehydration. But when the cameras stop rolling, Grylls has actually moved to luxurious hotels.

In the last two seasons, he and producers have contrived other scenes to make it appear as if Grylls is more skilled than he really is, a consultant for the show told The Times of London.

"If you really believe everything happens the way it is shown on TV, you are being a little bit naive," said Mark Weinert, an Oregon-based survival consultant, who said producers hired him as an adviser for the show.

Discovery Channel officials declined to comment, but in the U.K., where the show airs with the title "Born Survivor," stunned network officials at Channel 4 said they are conducting an internal investigation.

"Discovery Communications has learned that isolated elements of the 'Man vs. Wild' show in some episodes were not natural to the environment, and that for health and safety concerns the crew and host received some survival assistance while in the field," a spokeswoman for the network said.

"Moving forward the program will be 100 percent transparent and all elements of the filming will be explained up-front to our viewers. In addition, shows that are to be repeated will be edited appropriately."

According to Weinert, while filming in California's Sierra Nevada mountains - an episode in which Grylls, 33, is seen biting off the head of a snake for breakfast - Grylls actually spent some nights with the show's crew in a lodge outfitted with television, stone fireplaces, hot tubs and Internet access.

The Pines Resort at Bass Lake is advertised as "a cozy getaway for families" and is a luxurious hotel with its own spa on a lake.

In another instance, where Grylls was supposed to be surviving on a desert island, he was actually in Hawaii and spent nights at a motel, Weinert said.

The same episode had Grylls building a Polynesian-style raft using only materials around him, including bamboo, hibiscus twine and palm leaves for a sail. Weinert said he actually led a team of builders to construct the raft.

It was then taken apart so that Grylls could be shown building it on camera.

In another episode, viewers watched as Grylls tried to coax what seemed like a wild mustang into a lasso in the Sierra Nevada.

"I'm in luck," he told viewers, apparently coming across four wild horses grazing in a meadow. "A chance to use an old Native American mode of transport comes my way. This is one of the few places in the whole of the U.S. where horses still roam wild."

In fact, Weinert said, the horses were not wild but were brought in by trailer.

Re: ULTIMATE SURVIVAL TEQs & LES STROUD vs BEAR GRILLS!

Sure some of the stuff is staged and he probably doesn't camp out every night. I think in one episode he couldn't snare a rabbit and admitted that the film crew supplied him with one. Then he could show the proper way of cleaning one and cooking it.

In Survivorman Les as usual wouldn't have caught anything and then wouldn't have been able to show any techniques.

I remember one show of Survivorman I think it was an Alaska one. Where Les finds a dead fish washed up on shore and tries to use it as bait, without success. After a couple of days he then decides to eat the rotten fish. LOL. I don't need Les to show me how to find dead fish washed up on shore.

Re: ULTIMATE SURVIVAL TEQs & LES STROUD vs BEAR GRILLS!

I also remember one episode of Survivorman where Les is out in Africa and magically finds an ostrich egg. He doesn't show where or how he found it. Just, "Hey look! I found an ostrich egg!"

Just because he is alone doesn't mean he couldn't have extra, food, water and equipment with him.

Re: ULTIMATE SURVIVAL TEQs & LES STROUD vs BEAR GRILLS!

At a price of $100,000++++ to climb Mount Everest, climbing it at 19 just proves Bear has a rich dad. Bear's show is more entertaining, but come on, taking an ice cave as an escape route from a glacier is not a realistic option.

Bear's back up crew is good for giving a real demonstration of how things work-- he's a bit more professional.

But I gotta go with Les, he's a hell of a lot more realistic. Failure is part of surviving when you're alone and with very little-- That's why it's called surviving and not living the good life.

However, I do think Les can be a bit lazy in demonstrating techniques. Like setting 1 or two traps, in reality you need 6 to 30 traps depending upon how well you can read signs, to how well your traps actually work. I've lived on traps and occasionally teach primitive trapping at get togethers.

However my real vote if I had a choice for good survival videos (beyond synication would either be John McPherson or Ron Hood.

Hands down Bear Grills.

1. Bear know how to kill and is capable
2. Bear is in superior shape to Les
3. Bear can eat elephant pooh to survive
4. Bear likes to drink urine (probably into golden showers with his lady friends)
5. Bear gets laid, Les materbates (I'd rather hang out with Bear in a bar full of hotties)

Les Stroud 100% of the time...He's a one man show and tries his best to keep it real like it would really be.

Gryllis is annoying, over-the-top and makes a serious situation into a typical overhyped Hollywood production.

I heard that Les Stroud has diabetus and he goes into the bush without his testing supplies. Plus he looks somewhat grizzled. +2

If it's one thing that I find annoying with "man vs wild" is the background music that's played almost constantly. It's extremely annoying and distracting.

I'm one of the people who CAN watch something that doesn't play action/drama themed music in every scene. I don't want to watch a PG13 action movie FFS. I want to learn something.

HAHAHAHAHAHA never heard of either of these charactors, shows how little TV I watch cause I would be sucked right in if I saw them. Then again I think of all the phoney fair chase "hunting" shows I never watch anymore, after I saw one that was obviously shot inside a game farm very near me.

Les has the right attitude and mental fortitude but lacks many skills.

why not just learn from the real deal?
